“I want to get more involved at Mount, but I'm not sure how to do that. What do you recommend?”
As a person who’s willing to try many different things, I feel that Mount meets the needs of students by providing many different things for students to be involved in. The best place to start is with extracurricular activities. Because of the array of clubs and sports Mount offers, I completely understand how navigating through the list of activities can be difficult. However, I can assure you that Mount has something for you.
The best way to figure out which extracurriculars you would like to try is to reflect on you.
Ask yourself these questions :
How much time am I willing to put into extracurriculars ?
Are you okay with practicing everyday ?
Would you prefer to join a club that meets only a few times a week ?
How much of your time CAN and WILL you dedicate ? etc.
What hobbies and topics spark interest ?
Are you athletic ? Artistic ? Musically gifted ? Academic ? What do you find entertaining ? etc.
What do you hope to gain from an extracurricular ?
Are you looking for service opportunities ?
Do you hope to learn something new ?
Do you hope to make a difference in the world or your community ?
Do you wish to meet new people ? etc.
After asking yourself these questions, I recommend writing down what you have learned and keeping that information in mind.
For the first question that you answered, you have to reflect on what you are able to contribute in time. Things such as after school commitments, a job, not having a ride, or simply just motivation can narrow down your options.
Sports at Mount are highly encouraged; however, it is good to know that practices typically are everyday after school for a few hours- not to mention weekend games are a possibility. If you are willing to take this time and are interested in sports, I highly recommend trying out.
One of our most well known communities within Mount, the Student Leadership Organization, is another club that requires a significant amount of time. Entire SLA meetings, grade level officer meetings, and events are all things that should be taken into consideration.
If you do not feel capable of committing to a responsibility such as sports or SLA, consider a club that meets after school or during TC for less time. This of course is not meant to discourage you! It is just something you have to keep in mind when deciding what extracurriculars you would like to do.
The second question is the easiest to answer because we typically have a sense of what we find amusing and what we enjoy. It is especially important to consider your talents and gifts. Most extracurriculars are tailored to the interests of many students. These special interest clubs include Writing Club, Chess Club, Robotics, Drama Club, Stock Market Club, and many more.
If you play a sport or are interested in trying out for one, see what we have to offer for sports.
The final thing that will help you find your opportunity to get more involved at Mount is understanding what you are looking to gain. An extracurricular should never be useless; you will always benefit from being a part of something. Consider the Service Opportunity Depot, Earth Crew, SLA, The Hilltopper, and Campus Ministry if you are looking for service and or leadership opportunities.
The best thing about all extracurriculars is that you will always be collaborating with new people, meaning you will always have the chance to make new friends. I believe that this is the most important aspect of joining these communities with Mount because you will always be collaborating with Mounties. If you are having trouble finding more information on what extracurriculars Mount has to offer, don’t hesitate to ask your peers or teachers ! Many Mount students and teachers are involved and are willing to help you.
I wish you the best of luck on your journey at Mount!
